What is a MUN?
Model United Nations or MUN is an academic simulation of the United Nations for students and conducted entirely in English. A MUN aims to educate participants, by multilateral approaches, about several global issues of the international agenda, diplomacy, the functioning of the UN and current events.
The participants take on the role of diplomats, representing a country in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council. Every participant represents specific interests of one of the countries, and this representation has to be held as close to the real position of the given country as possible. The debate order is based on the rules of the UN and the UN-Charter. In sum, the participants are enabled to research a country, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult and develop solutions to global problems. Furthermore, students employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country, like public speaking, group communication, research, policy analysis, negotiating and conflict resolution.
